When the New Ulm Brewers close out their 2022 Tomahawk East League regular season Friday at Searles for 7:30 p.m. first pitch, the Brewers — who are 15-0 in the TEL — have a chance to do something that has not been done since the 1970s.

Go unbeaten in league play.

And the Brewers, who are 22-3 overall with a non-league home game at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday night at Mueller Park against St. Peter, are a team that is hitting (and pitching) on all cylinders.

As a team, the Brewers are hitting .370 with 26 home runs and 234 RBIs.

They have 50 doubles and 10 triples and have stolen 76 bases.

New Ulm’s pitching staff has a combined ERA of 3.03 and have combined to strike out 193 batters in 202 innings while walking only 80 batters.

And if you were at the Brewers-Courtland game at Johnson Park, you saw the Brewers wearing their new white alternative uniforms that were paid for by an anonymus donor.

STEEL SCHEDULE OUT: While the amateur baseball season is still on the front burner, the New Ulm Steel have released their 2022-23 home schedule that has 22 home games.

September 30 is the home opener against the Mason City Toros.

October has seven home contests (two are non-conference against the St. Louis Jr. Blues), with five home games in November, four each in December and January and one in February.

With Steel players set to return to New Ulm on August 15, Steel General Manager/Coach Alex North said that as of Tuesday, he currently has 23 players on his roster.

“I want to get 30 players on our roster,” North said. “And I did get invited to (North American Hockey League) Aberdeen’s camp this coming weekend and then our (NAHL) Chippewa camp the weekend after to find players. And right now I am getting to the point where I have to tell some players that I do not have a spot, which is a good problem to have. Word is getting out that this is where people want to be. All of the players who can return for us want to come back.”

Last season was not a good one for the Steel on or off the ice with three coaching changes, needed front office changes and a lack of players and wins.

“We do not want to forget that — it is part of our history and these players’ history — so I want them to remember it. But I want them to remember. so we do not go back there. We need to realize what it takes to get to the next level and where we want to be.

“We are going to do things the way that I have always done things as a player and coach with a team-first mentality.”

North also added that he is in the process of hiring an assistant coach.

“We have an offer out to a candidate, but right now we are waiting for the background check. We will be announcing that pretty soon.”
